Homesick in Valentine, Nebraska
It was the summer after my senior year in high school. I was on a church youth trip making our way to Alberta, Canada. We stopped in Valentine, Nebraska to give a concert at a little church and sleep on their pews for the night and I was selected to give the “testimony.” I don’t remember what I said, but I remember the theme was being homesick, particularly for our home in heaven.
That memory comes back as I am on the first of five plane rides over some 40+ hours as I make my way home once again. If only that 17 year old kid knew what journeys lay ahead and how many times being “homesick” would be beaten back to the recesses of his mind so he could focus on what needed to be done.
While he doesn’t express it this way, being homesick seems to be more and more a part of my 93-year old dad’s life as well. His journey has been long. His body is failing him. His mind isn’t as sharp. He knows sometime soon he will hear the call of his savior calling him home. And, he longs to go home.
But what is this home we long for? An idyllic place of myth and fantasy? A place of cherubim playing little harps and floating on clouds? Of course not.
I confess that I don’t know what all heaven will be like. I know the Bible describes a magnificent place. A place of awe and wonder. A place where all the tribes and languages of the earth will worship the one and only true God.
But there is something else I know with certainty. It is the place of belonging. The place for which I was created. The place where my purpose will be finally and completely fulfilled. It is my true home.
